Diary #281 Let it Out

In my previous job I prepared for a big argument with an ex-colleague who had gone behind my back.

We met, I ranted - all valid - and had my say.

His response surprised me: “Let it all out, let it out”.

No counterarguments, just “let it out…” Soon, I was like a kettle that run out of steam. He had neutralised the situation and in the end I even saw that I shared some of the responsibility.

Moving forward, I realised that my default in contentious arguments is logic. Which is impossible to absorb in the heat of the moment. First acknowledgement is needed for the emotional filter to fizzle out and only then can logic be processed effectively.

That’s why it’s helpful to argue, or reflect, some days later when the dust has settled.
