I'm with my aunt, having finished our errands and tell her: “We’ll go to the patisserie for loukoumades [greek sweets] only if you want to, I’m easy either way”.
Of course my intention here is to be helpful - whilst we planned it, I can see that she is tired - so we don’t have to go. But am I being helpful? Not really. She knows that we like loukoumades, just as much as she knows we’ll happily sacrifice them for her. And she loves making us happy, so…
A better suggestion would have been, "Aunty I’m busy, let’s just go home if you don’t mind”. I need to remember that passing the decision-making to others isn’t always helpful.
